Since its beginning, AHA has continued to provide quality, proximate, accessible and integrated health services within 33 settlements and a transit camp in the Adjumani District. In 2006  more than 50 thousand refugees and nationals accessed our services, assisting them in living a healthier and more economically productive life.

Both services play a key role in our work in Uganda, as a healthy and well nourished community leads to better protection and fewer problems. AHA currently operates 19 Health Centers in the region, each providing communities with access to essential medical services including: consultation and treatment, drug provision, laboratory testing, emergency response, reproductive healthcare, family planning, nutrition and therapeutic feeding and immunization.  The most common illnesses currently treated are malaria, respiration/tract infection, intestinal worms, wound/trauma, skin and eye infections, and diarrhea.

We continue to work hard to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS and provide support and treatment to patients.  Services include sensitization campaigns, health education in schools and youth groups, condom distribution, ongoing training for community members, post test clubs, income generating activities for people living with AIDS (PLWAs), RCT services and home care.  We also closely support the Health of Adolescent Project (HAP), which works predominantly with girls to promote reproductive health and reduce/prevent STIs, HIV/AIDS and teenage pregnancies.

Education and sensitization underpin all our efforts in health care delivery and we work tirelessly to raise the awareness of assisted populations on important health issues.  Recent efforts have included a focus on improved sanitation and environmental hygiene, highlighting the interrelation between health and the environment.  Campaigns have emphasised the need for good practice in waste disposal, homestead management, and safe water usage and cleanliness, to which the refugee community has responded positively.

In servicing affected populations AHA takes special care to ensure gender equality, and has strongly promoted the inclusion of women, along with other marginalized/vulnerable groups, in all camp activities.  We have specifically promoted women’s right to choose in relation to issues surrounding reproductive health and family planning.
